I just discovered this: In the gconf-editor (Applications > System Tools > Configuration Editor), under Apps > Metacity > General, there is a button_layout string. The default string value is 'menu:minimize, maximize, close', which puts a menu icon on the left side and the 3 (min/max/close) icons on the right. You can rearrange sequence and placement of the icon buttons by moving those names to left or right of the colon in that string.
In particular, I was happy to find I could remove _all_ buttons from the titlebar by deleting the button_layout string. Whoopie! Now I can avoid inadvertent application/window closures when I'm just trying to activate one of several windows cascaded in such a way that I only see corners. I am quite content to use right-click on the titlebar to close (or minimize, etc) windows .. don't need no steenkin' icons!
