(I *have* spent "some time reading the man page of [my] $SHELL" when I know I need to learn something there. Perhaps you have memorized its contents, but for a greenhorn like me, I'm lucky to be scratching the surface in other places where I've been clawing at.

Linux is too large to learn the whole thing. Bash is too large, too. I can spend time studying things I don't need right now, but that's a recipe for boredom and burnout. There's plenty of other things to learn, things that I can put to use right now, and do, hence my questions about echo .
