I couldn't find anything on this, but a search suggested installing an extension called "right click watch ignore".
I don't know about that, but I always read in "sorted by thread" mode. Clicking on the little thread swirly on the left selects the entire thread and I can delete it if I choose.
Other mailreaders I used to use can actually killfile a thread. There are some good algorithms that can track a thread even as its subject mutates.
