I thought I would float my plan for comment and input.
Ok but you asked for it :D
I have established to my satisfaction that overheating is (99% certainty) the only problem. Whether it is because of a clogged airway, poorly bedded heat sink, or bad fan, I cannot tell.
that leaves 1% ....
I have reached the end of my ability/experience to disassemble this machine without risking pile-'o-parts or damage.
...
So ... I will take it to the laptop repair shop with these instructions.
First I am not associated with the location you have chosen, nor any other walkin repair center I have delt with them a number of times, they do ok work.
However, I really hate it when people ask me to fix a computer and tell me "the only thing wrong is ..." the reality is even if sometime its helpful its not usually right and if you know exactly (thats the full 100%) what is wrong fix it yourself, they dont generally require extremely special tools. and the heatsinks, cpu, memory, hard drive are generally accessable with only a moderate amount of pile-'o-parts. laptops are a little more complex and its entirely possible that the hard drive is at fault, a bad bearing or a faulty controller (for clarification I am speaking about the on hard drive controller) causing increased heat, could easily cause the overheat .... Again I have not seen this laptop, but its entirely possible, and YES thats by experience! It sounds like you have done at least the basic homework now that you have a clue as to what might be wrong, you might be able to go back and just tell them that you have narrowed the problem down to heat. There are a number of ways the tech can cheat and determine what is overheating and narrow it down to one of a few things after its clean. Its entirely possible you will get out with only the initial $85 as I beleve earlier you said they would clean and reseat the heatsink for that.
- diagnose away, but it's heat. I will not pay for any repair that doesn't address heat. I am unlikely to pay for any part other than a fan.
So have at it, just be ready for something that isnt a fan, and may or may not fit your plan.
