ispell can;t update the system-wide dictionary, unless ran as root. Even
then, I don't think it would.

Look in $HOME/.ispell_default instead.


The manpage has the following snippets from the FILE section:

       $HOME/.ispell_hashfile
              User's private dictionary

       .ispell_hashfile
              Directory-specific private dictionary


Which actual spell checker you have installed must be
distribution-dependent.  Here on Fedora Core 3 and Core 6, it is
"aspell" and "ispell" is a shell script that calls "aspell".  Core 6
has both man and info entries for aspell, Core 3 has neither.
