You should be able to check the actual speed with iptraf on the server. The 802.11 stuff cuts back the speed if the signal strength is low. I did a test recently with a laptop, running iptraf while downloading a large file from an ftp server on the lan. Speed started dropping about 30' away. At 60-75' it had slowed to a crawl.
