Okay, so you store the output in a text file. But then what do you do with it?


That was answered also. It's just a convenience for me when I don't know where a file is but I know the name. The only time it does not help me is when some file is newer than the dump. And since the dump is done as root, it doesn't complain during the dump about permissions. And since the dump file allows all to read it, joe user can just grep it to find things, fast.

Andrew, the person asking the question to begin with.  The person to
whom you were offering advice.

grepping through /du-a isn't going to find, for example, "which
blasted file has the definition for ENOBUFS".
