Well I finally sorted it out. It seems that I managed to
delete the working printer. Then when I added a new printer
I got the wrong device file. This too forever to figure out.

Literally I wasted the better partof a day.

But the good news is that the printer is working again.

Sigh,

Unfortunately, I don't have much to add about the general problem, but
running firefox as sudo, as far as I know, will not transfer any
permissions over a http link (though, interestingly, Microsoft's
Internet Explorer can sort of do this with NTLM, but not with CUPS).
