Isn't Linux nice?!?
Nice that it allows this without killing off the kernel? yes. Nice
that this happens at all, however? Not in the least. It's little
bullshit problems like this that make the current revisions of desktop
environments reminiscent of window$.
Hence, the reason why today, I'm still using a window manager and
refuse the refuse that is a desktop environment. I don't need that
kind of junk getting in my way.

In that case then, I would say that it's nice that Linux allows you that
option. I doubt WindHose would.
But "reminiscent of window$"? WindHose would not have allowed me to
switch to another console. It would not have allowed me to throw out
the bathwater without sending the baby out with it.
It may have been a "little bullshit problem", but the solution was quite
welcome, and even better, attainable.
I'm grateful that I lost almost nothing. It took 4 days of trying to
figure out how to keep from losing a small but unique composition. The
computer was still quite useful to me the whole time. I couldn't use
Mozilla during that time (tho thankfully, Linux provides multiple
browsers, most of which don't mind if you launch it multiple times at
once). And because of consoles on F1 thru F6 and the command "man
startx" leading me eventually to "startx -- :1", I was able to do
everything I needed to do while learning more about the problem and
possible solutions. And during that 4 days, I discovered a problem with
my ISP's new webmail interface, *and* figured out a workaround for it.
(Now, it's ready for the next time I need it.) And I now know that it's
safe to go straight to "kill [gnome-panel]". That one single email was
the only thing on hold during that 4 days. That was an inconvenience,
as were the things that I learned, but I am now much better prepared for
whatever interruption may or may not come next. In many, many ways, I'm
still a Linux newbie. In other ways I'm not.
I *was* quite proficient with WindHose, but was (at every other turn)
beating my head against the wall trying fix things that it would not
allow me to fix. Where in Linux, there are multiple paths to a
solution, in WindHose there are multiple locked Gates blocking me from
success. And each successive version of WindHose found more of the
paths to success and installed locked Gates on them as well.
I'm glad that there are teams of Linux programmers out there working on
providing improved Desktops for the Linux community. I'm grateful that
they work as well as they do. I'm ecstatic that there are so many paths
in Linux to get to the guts. I'm in awe that Linux allows you to be a
mechanic to its engine, *while* the engine is running!
I don't mind that I ran into this problem with gnome-panel. I'm
currently thinking of searching/submitting a bug report for it (even
though I don't enjoy dealing with bugzilla). Why? I'm not a programmer
(well not to speak of). But I can help by outlining a problem that I
found and a solution I found. This can help Linux along.
I don't know if WindHose now has a bugzilla of sorts or not. And I
don't care.
"reminiscent of window$", *not*!
