The *kernel* isn't even that small in the old 0.X days.

I presume you mean 10 Megabytes.

You probably want uClinux and/or BusyBox.

The DSLinux folks also probably have some good advice for shoehorning
Linux into a device that doesn't have a memory manager and has weird
peripheral access.
