But is this info from the monitor? Or is this standard info based on
the settings it reads from config files?
I'm wondering if this info would have been the same before I added
1024x768 to my xorg.conf file.
When the hardware tab reports "unknown monitor" that is your cue to
set monitor type to "Generic CRT".
The resolution info reported by xrandr is a table of values that apply
to monitors capable of doing 1024x768 @75 which is Generic CRT
1024x768. Does that work for your monitor?
Yes.
Per your previous suggestion, I tried Generic CRT 1280x1024. Here's a
list of the resolutions it provided:
640x480 works, *but* gawd no!
800x600 this was previously the best I could get
1024x768 this is the highest I can get better than 60 Hz
1152x768 this works
1152x864 this works
1280x1024 this works
1280x800 curiously, this one would *not* work
1280x960 this works
1400x1050 this works, tho I think it's really 1280x???
1600x1200 ditto
1680x1050 ditto
1920x1200 ditto
Selecting each one required restarting X. (On selecting 1280x800, X
would not restart, otherwise, no problem.)
Each one that runs at 60 has some barely perceptible flicker or
somesuch. I don't notice it when I stare. But when my eyes move,
that's when I see it. It's just a tad bit distracting.
I have not yet tried Generic CRT 1400x1050 nor Generic CRT 1600x1200,
and do not know what resolutions they offer.
If not, you may have to edit xorg.conf to lower the maximum vertical
refresh rate. There will be a line like
VertRefresh 55.0 - 85.0
Change the 85 to 65, which is more conservative.
