SATA is better than PATA. Faster bus, better protocol (especially if your controller/drive do TCQ), and simpler wiring. No more fat cables resisting your bending and blocking your airflow. SATA is also hot-swap capable if you have the right enclosure. A home user probably doesn't but it's still nice in case you put the drive in something else someday.
