Unlicensed spectrum has been allocated to Wimax already. Wimax shares the 
2.4GHZ with 802.11. There are techniques such as changes in poliarity to avoid 
interference. Wimax also has tools to deal with interference such as:
OFDM
Dynamic Frequency Selection
Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation
Adaptive Antenna Systems (beam forming/steering)
Multiple In/Multiple Out (MIMO) 
AntennasSoftware Defined Radios (SDR)

But if Wimax becomes widely adopted then perhaps 802.11 will disappear over 
time.

Yes but all the happy goes away if we can't use WiMax in unlicensed spectrum.
