After 6 years on Linux with ATi and falling for Terry Makedons hollow marketing chatter over and over again all I can say here: if you can, get rid of ATi.

I've been telling people for years that the only real choice for Linux
is NVIDIA. It's unfortunate, but they really are the only real choice.

It depends on what you want to do. Intel is supporting all the features of their chips with open source drivers. It's just that they aren't in the same ballpark if you want to do gaming. Via also supports open source for their chips, but again they are underpowered compared to nVidia or ATI for something like gaming. And as near as I can tell you can only get the Intel or Via video chips as part of an all-in-one motherboard.

The open source drivers for my chipset work fine EXCEPT for the TV-Out, but right now that is the one function that I want to keep working, at least until I redo my MythTV box and move it to the TV set.

I may have confused people by my reference to video above. I this case the video I am referring to is a composite NTSC signal intended for a TV set, not the display on my laptop screen.
