I echo most everything Mike said about irssi. I used BitchX for a long time, and finally moved to irssi. It has much better handling for multiple servers, is extensible with perl, and works with bitlbee (the IM to IRC gateway I use). I also use the BitchX theme for irssi. It helps to give things a nice, familiar look and feel. Not exactly, but close enough.
