vi # vim when you boot into linux rescue. There it's only vi.
I recently installed Kubuntu for a friend and was disappointed when a
couple of vim commands didn't work. Can't remember for sure what but
possibly 'V' (mark by line).
I found that the default Kubuntu install put on vi and not vim. vim
installed without issue and all was well.
