Quick and dirty report...

Laptop Dell 710m, Fedora 7.
Linux hekate 2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 #1 SMP Tue Jun 12 15:37:31 EDT 2007 i686 i686
i386 GNU/Linux

Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM
(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

symptoms- built in speakers and headset jack worked fine till yesterday, and
most recent update via yum, suspect kernel 2.6.21-1.3228. after update,
speakers no longer work ( will play 'beep' at console, but no audio, mp3,
wav, ogg, etc etc. ) No amount of fiddling with alsamixer, OSS makes any
difference. Here is why I believe it may be hardware:

headphone jack still works fine. No sound can be coaxed from built in speakers
by booting previous kernel, ***from booting kubuntu live CD, from booting
older knoppix 5.1,**** only sound via headphones. google indicates others
reporting similar symptoms, on HP's, Toshiba's. A couple people think it may
be related to ACPI. One thread on ubuntu Feisty Faun has fellow suggesting
it may have toggled voltage output on whatever dingus controls the PC
speakers on the MB, that's why headphones still work. IANAEENDIPOOTV, so I
cannot comment on that possibility.
Suspend, hibernate tweaks as per these discussions have not restored sound as
some users have reported.

NOW, I cannot *prove* that my speakers didn't just randomly fail, I simply
suspect that it's related to the kernel upg, and am leaning further that way
on others reporting similar symptoms.

Problem is, I can't undo it.

C.
