Nah, I wouldn't advise installing the 32bit version on a 64bit box today -- year-before-last, maybe. I think there were earlier problems with x86_64 that AFAIK seem to have been overcome. Maybe you just need to enable the "multiverse" repository for nonfree packages. In general, I think most would advise sticking to _packages_ designed for your distro unless there's some special reason to build it yourself. In this case, it looks like you just didn't know about the nonfree resources? .. I'm guessing. Hope I got the name right (multiverse). If not, I'm sure someone will correct me.
