I don't think you can do this in a straightforward way because you
have no easy control over the mechanism that the ultimate reader uses
to display the message. GMail sends plain ASCII, as can be seen by
looking at "show original".
This thread has its beginnings with blq sending some kind of readout
which he *attempted" to align with proportional fonts in his email
composer. This *might* display correctly if the receiver is using a
proportional font for displaying email and has similar proportions in
that proportional font.
The list members receiving the email are responsible for their own
fixed-space or proportional display. I set my mail reader to show plain
text as monospace. I do the same for my email composer. If the people
receiving my email have it displayed in a proportional font, that's
their problem. Sorry, but true.
If you have your email composer set to a monospace font, then you have
done all you can to have text line up properly. If your own email
reader is set to proportional, then your own email with properly aligned
text won't line up right for you when you receive it from the list.
If you don't care too much about seeing text aligned properly in the
mail you receive, then it doesn't matter whether or not you use
monospace in your email reader. But if you want text to line up
properly for the receiver, the best you can do is use a monospace font
for email composition.
If I receive an HTML email, then it will still display properly as HTML.
Otherwise, I see monospace.
