IF it were looking for the tag, tags have rarely been effective
My description wasn't clear. It was decoding the plate numbers and
running it against the DMV database. Primarily looking for expired
registration, and they said they occasionally would find a stolen car
or one wanted for something else.

I'm wondering when they will RFID the tags that go on our plates in the
same fashion tech wise that EZ-Pass works for highway tolls where you
can fly through the toll booth at full speed and the paid-up toll device
gets ID'd and debited as you fly by. With automation like that the data
is already used in court cases to establish or verify parts of the facts
in question. More remote automated devices could potentially track every
vehicle at every signal/stop/traffic sign out there... or where ever...
