If I don't use my Seagate FreeAgent USB drive for about ten minutes, then try to read or write, I get IO errors and something like the following from dmesg:sd 2:0:0:0: Device not ready: <6>: Current: sense key=0x2 ASC=0x4 ASCQ=0x2 end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 198137108 More details are available at: http://wsms.wikiplanet.com/mediawiki/index.php/FreeAgent A google search showed that other folks are having similar issues, so it is not a problem with my individual piece of hardware. Where would I go to see if the Linux USB drivers have been fixed or can be fixed for this?
Why are you assuming there is a problem with the Linux USB drivers? It is more likely that the problem lies in the Seagate drive, probably from some poorly implemented power saving technique.
I have several makes and models of USB external drives and none of them have this problem.
