Actually, there were quite a few even before that. If you look at lists of revision control systems, there were many different systems that were all better than CVS. It's just that none of them were compelling enough to cause a switch.

Yes, it's called a laptop.

Suddenly the ability to work offline/disconnected was crucial.

I can explain to a developer the benefits of offline functionality and they can see and use it really quickly with no training at all. That's the definition of a "killer feature."
