I was thinking along similar lines. Which pieces (access point, client
machines) run under which wi-fi specifications (802.11 a/b/g/n)?

It sound like the "el cheapo" Vista machine has a wireless antenna
that's less capable than the other machines on the network, or that
it's currently set in some sort of "compatibility mode" and not fully
using its capabilities.
