I feel your pain. Having a family is an irrational act, but unfortunately
it seems to be in our hard wiring.

Google "coyote linux" and "seattle shorewall". If those two projects are
still on line, they can be used (I did it so you can!) to make a fine
firewall/router out of an old 486 w/ 2 nics.

But I gotta tell you, for myself, just buying a small wifi router/firewall
was one of the best moves I ever made. I have so many Linux projects I
can't even get to, the time I save for a $35 appliance is found money.
