My blog <http://marksitblog.blogspot.com> has a how-to on using DRBD and
Heartbeat for MySQL. Same basic instructions can be used for webservers,
ftp, etc. Start with http://linux-ha.org/, and go from there.

As with any new tech, test, break it, test it, break it some more before
deployment! This is where having VMware server, and multiple virtual
machines to play with, you can create such a testing/development/learning
environment to get comfortable with new technology without going broke in
purchasing hardware.
