I don't know why I never asked this before, but what happens if I plug two PCs together with a standard USB male-to-male cable?
Doesn't work that way. Already answered in subsequent posts.
And, what conceivably might PC-USB-PC be used for with appropriate software added? - NFS over USB? - more ways to share storage? - terminal emulation?
Possible but not efficient nor cost effective. The USB protocols have horrible overhead so you don't get nearly the advertised bandwidth. You would be much better off using a crossover ethernet cable (regular works for gigabit) and just running regular ethernet. Also much safer because the ethernet is transformer isolated and you don't run the risk of ground loops or cross-circuiting the power supplies. Plus your connection length can be much longer.
Cheap PCI gigabit boards (RealTek for example) are available at Fry's for about $7 when on sale. Most new machines have it built in already.
