Have you guys heard of the Chumby? It's hard to describe. It's sort of
like a Linux powered electronic gadget/appliance that displays various
kinds of information, plays music, browses the web, etc. It has wi-fi.
The real beauty is that it is totally open. The
software/firmware/schematics, you name it.
Check it out at chumby.com. I may have to get one just to find out for
myself whether the thing is really cool and useful or not. I had a
coworker from my current employer leave a few weeks ago to work for
Chumby. They are based here in San Diego.
I mention the Chumby because I just happened across this blog:
http://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/
It is about the experiences of the designer of the Chumby getting his
device mass-produced in China. Really interesting stuff.
Technology, culture, economics, he hits it all.
