What did Microsoft do wrong, actually? The letter doesn't say.

The letter does say:

Mandriva arranged for schools in Nigeria to acquire 17,000 laptops. Mandriva put the deal together and donated the OS. They invested a lot of time and money in it. Once the deal was done Microsoft swooped in and gave them free copies of Windows to put on the laptops. If all of the laptops get installed with Windows it means Mandriva has gained absolutely nothing by doing this and MS has shafted Nigeria also by locking them into their proprietary software.
