There are two different CDs. I highly reccomend that you get the CD that allows you to use the character mode install. This is _not_ the live CD, which you get by default. Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download then note the check box near the bottom of the page beside which is the text, "Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer." This installer is _much_ more reliable than the one which comes with the live CD. There are numerous reports of problems with the live CD installer and almost no negative reports about the text-based installer.
