I have heard this a lot but I have never run into an inside job situation in all of my time as a sysadmin. I have had various forms of external intrusions both automated and human driven but we have never fired an employee for internal hacking. I can think of events caused by employees who were fired and caused problems because they had access due to very poor processes but they were no longer "inside".
