At Saturday's bookstore ifest, there was a problem booting Eric's presario 2500(?,2598?) with ubuntu 7.10 after install. The boot was taking several minutes and showing just a black screen (although Ctrl-Alt-F1 switched to showing progress messages which helped alleviate the doubts and boredom ;-)) Attempts to implement one "known fix" by diddling something associated with the splash screen in Grub's menu.lst did not help.
Eric found a posting in a ubuntu forum which worked, and changed the boot time to more like 20 seconds, and it now shows the splash, too. This seems to be the posting http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3843205&postcount=32 I haven't tried to understand the underlying problem. -- comments welcome :-) Eric still has kplug-list problems, but did report his success to me. so I'm posting this on his behalf, and for the benefit of others who observed the problem Saturday, as well as others who may see similar problems.
