Is there widespread feeling that FreeBSD makes a better fileserver than
Linux?
Only among disaffected BSD users. I'm still waiting for one of these
guys who complain about Linux as a fileserver to come up with some real
bug reports so that the problems can be fixed. But I've used Linux to
serve up many terabytes of disk with NFS and Samba and always had good
results.
Akamai has been using Linux as file servers for many years. They had
over 12,000 servers on the 'net when I was there (most being Linux, only
a small percentage being something else like Windows for Windows Media
streaming), were moving above 15,000 last I read (a couple years ago),
and must be near 20,000 by now (if not more).
I've been using it for years. My brother has. My last employer moved to
it. I know of many other people and companies that do. All of these have
used, and still use, NFS and Samba.
So, I'd have to have some damned good evidence that there's something
much, much better than Linux to use as a reliable file server before I
changed. Now I will say that I do believe there are probably better
alternatives to NFS, but I'm not sure which one (mainly because I
haven't had the time - nor a good reason to make the time - to research
them).
