I have a WD-1600 jumpered and cabled as /dev/hdb, except now (and I do NOT

Your old kernel did not have a SATA driver for your motherboard, so was
using the controller in IDE emulation mode. Now you have a kernel that
has SATA drivers, the device appears as SCSI device.

So the box BIOS finds this drive as Auto and fills in its size, but
doesn't offer it to me as a resource during the install.

So, you're saying that the F8 installer doesn't identify the drive and
offer it as a resource? Is it not available as one of the /dev/sd?
devices?

Tell me what I need to tell you to get this moving.

Can you get to a shell prompt and do a dmesg? It should identify the
drives and what got assigned to what.

Or, am I misunderstanding what isn't working?
