I went through this book (exercises and all) when I was a student at UCSD.
I didn't have a group or anything, which probably would have helped.  I
would say I learned more from that single book than any actual class I
took.

There's a lot more to learn from the book than just Scheme.  It covers
fairly diverse areas of computer science, making use of Scheme's
flexibility.
