I just got this email and thought one of you might like to check it out.
I paid $400 and received my own XO laptop and a kid in a developing
country in need of education (these kids already have food, water, the
basics. Now they need education) receives one also.
So now I have a $200 deduction on my taxes, I have a cool little laptop
for using at the coffee shop or datacenter, I have promoted the spread
of Linux, and I have helped a child have a better life.
I have learned in my travels that most kids (especially those in
oppressive countries) do not have much if any access to information,
especially outside information which their government fears.
I have also seen that it is impossible for any regime be it
governmental, parental, or copyright to keep motivated and talented kids
from doing anything they want with their computers. No firewall has not
been circumvented, no nanny-ware has not been disabled, no music or
movie not copied.
In about 18 years time I expect that this project will have had a
significant influence on the developing world and the spread of freedom
and success.
I have a friend who just did that. I plan to scope out his machine before
deciding. It's a good cause, but I would need to justify it by having use
for the machine.
Good for you.
If it matters, along with your very own OLPC, you also get a one year
subscription to T-Mobile Wifi. BTW, you only have three days and
counting to make up your mind.
