This is a serious annoyance. I used to have some Sonicwall firewalls on our corporate network before I threw them out. They had a very low timeout (a matter of minutes) by default so my ssh sessions kept dying. I have also found that a number of consumer grade routers/firewalls have very low NAT timeouts. Which means that I have to configure all of my VOIP phones to send a keepalive or re-register every single minute. A serious PITA. The firewalls forget about the connection if there is no traffic to free up those few bytes of memory from the NAT connection table. I guess they are trying to go cheap on the amount of memory in the devices so they keep a minimum amount of info in RAM.
