The modems supplied by AT&T (at least for their low-end DSL service users - i.e. $10/mo.) do not expose the actual WAN address to the router. The router only sees the LAN address (in this case 192.168.1.64) assigned it by the DSL modem, which cannot be modified at the DSL modem.

Are you talking about this teeny non-wireless Motorola ADSL modem?

That's what I got with my AT&T service, and yes out of the box it's already performing all your PPPoE and NAT. So if you stick another router like your Netgear behind it, you do have a double-NAT situation and yes you'll get a non-routable WAN address (and a host of other screwy networking issues).

Yucky! But guess what - it doesn't have to be this way. If you visit the webpage of the Motorola, you'll find it has two mode choices: 1) "PPP is on the modem" (default); and 2) "PPP is on the computer." What you want to do is switch it to mode #2, and then tell your router that the WAN connection is PPPoE. Put in your AT&T credentials and now your router will get the external routable WAN address.

Works beautifully for me with m0n0wall.
