The modems supplied by AT&T (at least for their low-end DSL service

Are you talking about this teeny non-wireless Motorola ADSL modem?

That's what I got with my AT&T service, and yes out of the box it's
already performing all your PPPoE and NAT. So if you stick another
router like your Netgear behind it, you do have a double-NAT situation
and yes you'll get a non-routable WAN address (and a host of other
screwy networking issues).
Yucky! But guess what - it doesn't have to be this way. If you visit
the webpage of the Motorola, you'll find it has two mode choices: 1)
"PPP is on the modem" (default); and 2) "PPP is on the computer."
What you want to do is switch it to mode #2, and then tell your router
that the WAN connection is PPPoE. Put in your AT&T credentials and
now your router will get the external routable WAN address.
Works beautifully for me with m0n0wall.
