You would have to make sure to properly quote all of your shell variables so that the whole filename spaces and all get passed along. I probably wouldn't bother to change spaces to underscores etc. The original poster did not specify that they wanted to remove spaces and squash caps although if I were going to do so I would do it in just one for loop piping through a series of tr and sed commands to get the desired result.
