A major cause of failure in external USB disk boxes is overheating of
the drive.  A Sorbothane wrap is not going to help that at all.

Are you thinking 3.5" or 2.5" drives?
Shock mounting for a drive while it is in use, or padding for transportation?

You probably should read  the drive manufacturer's spec sheets about
allowable shock, especially for 2.5" drives, which seem to be quite
rugged off the shelf.  Like 300G for 2ms operating, 900G for 1ms
non-operating, for a Seagate 160GB Momentus drive.
