Any possibility that you (originally) accidentally did the above as root and overwrote the default config or something? Try an rpm -V top and see if perhaps it points out a default file that's not matching the md5sum or something and remove/replace that.

Or use strace to see which files it's reading in when invoked and see if one of those was updated and is configured with the setup you don't like.
