You are asking two questions here. The first question is where can you send someone who isn't a professional IT person to get opinions about software, and maybe hardware.

CNet.com is one place where I would send someone like that. They tend to cater to people who need information on that level.

The other question, although not specifically asked, is where can you as a more experienced IT person go to get information about Microsoft products when your friends and relations want you to be their tech support.

Here you will find techrepublic.com has much more technical information on the gotchas of Microsoft. Be warned though that the information there is much more technical than the typical Microsoft User can understand or handle. And, that TechRepublic is in bed with Microsoft i.e. they get a lot of their revenue from being an advocate of Microsoft.

On the hardware technical side, for you, it is hard to beat Tom's Hardware Guide at http://www.thg-news.com/

Sometimes, if you don't mind taking your chances of being misled you can send friends and relations to ComputorEdge Magazine or on-line to ask Digital Dave a question. But be aware that he is strictly Microsoft centric and whenever he expresses an opinion about anything that isn't Microsoft he is usually woefully wrong.

Good Luck!

I read about a program

that seems like it might do me some good. Should I try it.

I did get asked about this one, and might like to know the proper answer
in this case..

..but it would be _way better_ if I could say go to this/these site(s)
to find respectable reviews and recommendations and otherwise "straight
talk".

Anybody have suggestions for any such reputable sites. There must be
some, probably many -- the need is so great! :-)
