I've been taught you don't know anything until you do a complete update, so I did exactly that (how did we live before yum?) and recompiled madwifi. The wlan0 appeared magically in the RedHat network config GUI tool, which is healthy, but loading the driver still locks up the machine.
I cannot ignore the possibility that I have a bum wireless PCI card.
