A good thought, and worth a test, I'd say. He did say that xterm pops up ok, so it's probably(/maybe?) not a X-server problem. It might be worth testing other graphical apps, though -- explorer, or maybe something more self-contained. I find that running firefox over ssh has poor performance in comparison to running over vnc. Maybe you might consider vnc, JO?
