It's fine that you disagree, but not very significant. A vast majority of users want/need progress. User interface guidelines require it. Programs that don't print out progress get killed by users who aren't sure what is happening, etc. These aren't just novice users either. Linus was recently complaining about something taking too long before printing out progress.
Ask me how I feel about Y/N "should I proceed" questions that sit on my screen overnight.
