Okay, first, you're misquoting, by pulling stuff out of the .sig and
quoting it as if it were part of the main text. Please don't. See that

An author.

He makes a lot of compelling arguments about how to present information,
and how not to present it.

First, they don't. Many use an off-white, or some other 'neutral' color.

Second, conveying information is not the primary purpose of a great
many websites. Making money is. 

Third, I suspect a great many people do not sit in darkened rooms with
large monitors; an all-white page is most likely okay when viewed in a
well-lit room.
