For home networks, I usually wimp out on the security and use
security=SHARE in the server-side setup. I use swat for configuration,
BTW, it has nice builtin help and makes it easier to do most things
without being an expert -- or when you have forgotten 95% of what you
used-to-[think-you]-kn[oe]w ;-)

Don't forget to make sure
  browseable=yes
  available=yes
are set. They should be defaults, but I like to check -- especially when
debugging.

The above is for samba on desktops.
On Windows boxes, I just use no passwords on the "share" (can't remember
the details).

For laptops, I prefer *not* to run samba server, but if I did, I would
probably use security=USER. (Don't remember details for Windows boxes
