Who's your ISP? I've used both COX and TWC/RR. Both are very fast and
pretty good on the retention.

The free servers that I've found are all unusable... it takes so long to
get even a few article headers that the connection just resets or stops
working. The NNTP server provided by my ISP is equally as slow, and
it's outsourced... they tell me I must contact the news provider, and
the news provider won't talk to me because it's a bulk contract and the
ISP is their customer, not me. I hope they aren't paying a lot for this
"service".
For several years, I had a working account on a good server that was
given to me by someone on NANAE, but it stopped working. I'm hoping
some kind soul either admins an NNTP server and would be willing to give
me an account (I don't do binaries, just a few text groups ;-) ), or
maybe knows of a free server that will actually let me download headers
in a reasonable amount of time and post a few posts per day.
