I saw code a guy did at SPAWAR where he initialized a data structure with hundreds of lines of copied code. When asked about it, he said it was easier to read the code that way. I also saw Java get a bad rep when a developer built a help system in Java with HTML files but because he terminated the JVM after every help page, they blew the entire project off as "Java was slow" and recoded it in C.
