Among the responses was me trying to recall the name of a script that seemed to played a key role, the time I successfully installed Fedora 7 on a 1GB device (the minimum specified for f7). It was livecd-iso-to-disk a part of the package livecd-tools as discussed in http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD/USBHowTo ==> Perhaps others will add comments and references for other distros and/or recipes.
