I found an interesting web page:

install a Fedora Live CD image onto a USB stick.

A couple of gotcha's that they gloss over:
That I can tell, you can't install the Live CD image from a running
Live CD.  You need a real OS with the ISO image of the live CD present
in the file system.
And the USB stick must have its (one and only) partition marked as
bootable before you start the process.

After that it takes a few minutes to transfer all the data, and seems
to work.  A small check shows that changes made to the booted system
persist over reboots.  Iff you have read and followed the paragraph
entitled "Live USB Persistence".
